The connection between our physiology and our emotions has become increasingly evident. We know that medications like Prozac and Zoloft work by supplying adequate levels of seretonin in people whose levels are too low. Seretonin is one of our “feel good” neurotransmitters. Without appropriate levels we suffer from depression. A deficiency of seretonin is as physiological a deficiency as is insulin. Previously we saw the former as “emotional” and the latter as “physical”. Actually both are “physical”. We now know that our emotions are related to our physiology and we no longer have to feel stigmatized.
